Cure For Hives

Cure For Hives
Has anyone that has had “chronic hives” ever found a cure or something that suppresses them?!?

I have had hives for 7 weeks now. The first two weeks they were out of control – all over my body, face, legs, back, feet – I mean it was just so miserable. At that time my doc had me on prednisone and even after the 12 day supply, they did not go away, but I refused to take another 12 day supply of that stupid steroid. Now, at week 7, I am happy to say that I am doing better (and only taking Benadryl). The hives only come out when I’m asleep because I wake up with them and they are now only on my legs and no longer anywhere else. Throughout the day they go away and when I go to sleep I have nothing but then wake up with them. Although they have gotten a lot better and I am not on any prescription drugs, the few that come out are very frustrating! Will they eventually just go away?!!! Help!

It sounds like they may be going away and hopefully they will. That is a very good suggestion to wash the sheets a second time with vinegar to completely rinse out the soap. Another trigger might be that you are getting too warm under the covers when you sleep and that is setting them off.
I had hives for 10 years (yuck) but got rid of them when I went on a gluten free diet and have been gluten free hive free for over 6 years now. Different things affect people differently and hives are especially difficult to figure out. An allergy doctor is usually the best suited to help figure it out, not that they will find the cause which would be the best but because they work most with the medicines that work for treating hives. I know of people taking asthma meds that keep their hives under control, different allergy meds and low doses of prednisone or medrol all can work for different people.
I wish you luck and hope your hives go away and put some articles in for you to look at.

Types of Sun Allergies

Sun Allergies: Symptoms and Treatment

Sun allergies are so common in their occurrence, that most people don’t even realize that the rash they have is caused due to excessive exposure to the sun. Read on to know more about its symptoms and treatment.

solar urticaria, sun allergies

A sun allergy is a reaction of the immune system, caused by sensitivity due to sunlight, and is known as photosensitivity. They occur when the sun-exposed skin reacts abnormally to sunlight. Scientist are still not able to understand the exact reason for its occurrence, though some research indicates inheritance as one of its reasons. The most common explanation is that the immune system treats the sun-altered skin as foreign substances and activates its defensive mechanism against it, causing allergic reactions.

Sun Allergies: Symptoms and Treatment
There are mainly four types of sun allergies. Sun allergy symptoms and treatments depend on the type of sun allergy. Following are the types, its symptoms and treatments.

Polymorphous Light Eruption (PMLE)
PMLE symptoms are an itchy or burning skin rash, as red plaques or small fluid-filled blisters, that can bleed on rupture, on the sun-exposed skin. It occurs within a couple of hours after sun-exposure and at times maybe accompanied by chills, headache or nausea. It usually occurs on exposed portions of the neck, upper chest, arms and lower legs. They tend to disappear on their own in a couple of days, but for some people it keeps re-occurring every spring and summer, resulting in a decrease in the skin’s sensitivity to sunlight.

A mild reaction can be treated using a cold compress application or spaying the skin with cold water in frequent intervals. A more severe or hardened allergy is treated through medications such as an oral antihistamine, like diphenhydramine or chlorpheniramine, or any anti-rash skin cream containing cortisone. For extreme cases, doctors usually prescribe photo therapy treatment, where the skin is gradually exposed to ultraviolet light (UV), in small and frequent doses to build skin resistance to the sun. Sometimes, a combination of psoralen and ultraviolet light, antimalarial drugs or beta-carotene tablets are also used for treating PMLE sun allergy.

Actinic Prurigo
This form of sun allergy is an inherited form of PMLE. As its nature is inheritable, it begins early in life during childhood or adolescence. They share similar symptoms as PMLE form, but the rash occurs more on the face, than any other place. It re-occurs in spring and summer, while in tropical climates it persists round the year. Actinic prurigo sun allergy is treated using medications that include corticosteroids, thalidomide, antimalarial drugs, beta-carotene and UV, depending on the severity of the allergy.

Photoallergic Eruption
When the skin is exposed to sun, at times it reacts to the chemical component or substance present in the application used on the skin, such as sunscreen, fragrances, cosmetics or ointments and even to some prescribed drugs. The skin reacts and produces tiny red rashes or fluid-filled blisters. It may also spread through clothing, that covers the infected area. Most of the times, these symptoms present themselves after 2 to 3 days of sun exposure. The duration of photo allergic eruption, depends on the duration of the particular chemical substance used. The most common treatment prescribed by the doctor other than corticosteroid cream, is to find and eliminate the allergy causing products.

Solar Urticaria
This rare form of allergy is considered to be the only true form of sun allergy. It produces hives on the affected parts of the skin. It exhibits symptoms within minutes of exposure to sunlight, and if the hives are formed individually, they fade away within a couple of hours. It is treated as per its severity. For mild allergies, oral antihistamine or an anti-itch skin cream, containing cortisone is prescribed. For severe symptoms, a combination of psoralen and ultraviolet light, antimalarial drugs or beta-carotene tablets are used for its treatment.

Some over the counter medications like Vitamin E, Aloe Vera and quercitin (flavonoids) can prove to be helpful in treating and healing sun allergies. Besides these, preventive measures like using a good quality and high SPF sunscreen, and sun protection gear, should be used regularly. Exposure to sunlight cannot be avoided, but a few simple preventions taken, can save us the agony of dealing with sunburns and rashes.

Any home remedies for prickly heat rash?

I don’t have any skin conditions such as psoriasis or excema, and I don’t have any skin allergies. It’s definitely heat rash of some sort. I just get patches of itchy rashes during the summer when it’s hot and humid. I have been China for for years and TCM hasn’t helped much. Right now the best relief I can get is from taking a hot shower (to open the pores), covering my body with shampoo or other products containing menthol, waiting about five to ten minutes until my whole body tingles. After that I rinse with hot water again (to clean the products chemicals out of my pores), then a cold water rinse to close the pores and cool off. This is usually only temporary relief. I do sweat a lot (more than most people), so I take about three cold showers a day too cool off and clean out the pores. I do refrain from scratching (as I know it makes it worse) during waking hours, but during my sleep, I have involuntary scratching. I am really into alternative health and home remedies. Thanks

Prickly heat is a common condition in which areas of the skin itch intensely and often feel prickly, or sting, due to overheating. Also called heat rash prickly heat looks like tiny bumps surrounded by an area of red skin. It usually occurs on clothed parts of the body, such as the back, abdomen, neck, upper chest, groin or armpits and goes away on its own within a few days. In severe forms, however, prickly heat can interfere with the body’s heat-regulating mechanism and cause fever, heat exhaustion and even death.

Prickly heat occurs most often in hot, humid conditions, but you may develop it in cool weather if you are overdressed. The condition usually appears a few days to a few months after exposure to a hot, humid environment. It’s most common in infants. Newborns are particularly vulnerable to prickly heat because their sweat ducts are not mature, which makes it easier for the beads of moisture to be trapped.

Symptoms:
* Small, itchy red bumps on the skin
* Prickly, stinging or burning sensation in the affected area

# Try to avoid scratching, for this may introduce germs into the deeper layers of the skin.
# Wear cool, light clothing and abstain from alcoholic drinks.
# Oatmeal baths twice a day may also relieve the itch.
# Drink plenty of water during hot weather.
# Keep the skin clean and avoid the use of harsh soaps.
# Gently wash skin with soft gauze and lukewarm water and pat on a mixture of one part alcohol to three parts boiled water after cooled.
# Make a compress by dipping a washcloth in a mixture of one teaspoon of baking soda per cup of cool water. Apply to the rash for five to ten minutes. Do this four or five times a day.
# Avoid overdressing. Allow Skin to breathe. Avoid heavy moisturizers.
# Dress your baby sensibly, preferably in layers that can be peeled away as conditions change and you’lllikely avoid the problem altogether.
# Remove some clothing, take her into an air-conditioned room or sit her in a tub of tepid water.
# Wear loose, lightweight clothing. Dust the affected area with cornstarch.
# Avoid sweating by staying in a cool environment.
# Apply paste of gram flour and then a cold-water bath after sometime. It will give relief.
# Prepare a mixture by adding 1 teaspoon of sandalwood powder, 1-teaspoon coriander seeds (dhania) powder, 1 teaspoon nagarmusta (Cyperus scariosus) powder and rose/cold water to make paste. Mix them well and apply on the body. Leave it on for an hour and then take cold-water bath.
# The paste made of powdered bark of pipal tree and finely powdered brick is applied on the affected parts all over the body.
# The powder of sandalwood dusted all over the body is effective in giving relief in prickly heat.
# The paste made of the seeds of jambul and applied over the body is effective in treating prickly heat.
# Persons suffering from prickly heat should avoid heavy garments and try to expose the affected area to air.
# Dissolve Fuller’s earth (Multani mitti) in water to make a thin paste. It should be smeared over the affected parts. When the paste dries, wash with cold water.
# Apply green henna ground in water on the affected skin.
# Grind leaves of neem in water and apply on the affected skin.
# Take a small piece of sandalwood and rub it into a paste on a stone with rose water. Mix a pinch of powdered alum to the paste and apply to the affected skin twice or thrice a week depending upon the condition of prickly heat.
# Leave babies nappy off as often as possible.

Gently wash skin with soft gauze and lukewarm water and pat on a mixture of one part alcohol to three parts boiled water after cooled. Dust with Talcum powder Or, use baking soda in a little water than dust with talcum.

Soak away the itch. To counter the itching that accompanies prickly heat, add some baking soda or a colloidal oatmeal product such as Aveeno Bath Treatment to a tub of tepid water or make your own oatmeal bath. A good soak will soothe the skin and take away the itching.

Try a cool compress. While a thin coating of mild, water-based moisturizing lotion may help stop the itching, cool compresses sometimes work better. Make a compress by dipping a washcloth in a mixture of one teaspoon of baking soda per cup of cool water. Apply to the rash for five to ten minutes. Do this four or five times a day.

If your child is older and is extremely uncomfortable, give him/her an antihistamine such as children’s Benadryl. ( Be sure to read package directions to make certain the product is recommended for your child’s age. For the correct dosage, follow package directions or consult your physician.) Kids are much more sensitive to itchiness at night, and more likely to scratch the rash, which can lead to infection

Prevention:
Avoid overdressing.
Allow Skin to breathe
Avoid heavy moisturizers. Tender newborn skin tends to be dry and in need of moisturizing. But heavy, oil-based creams can be a problem. ‘Moisturize with a light, water-based lotion instead.
