Breaking Out Hives

My room mate is breaking out with hives on his back and arms?
They itch a little. What could this be? What should he take? What should I tell him to do?
Generic Claritan or Benedryl from the drug store.
Hives are the result of an over release of histamines into the blood stream. This is usually caused by an allergic reaction to food (for me it’s seafood). Over the counter antihistamines will prevent this, but he needs to determine what he is allergic to.
